If you’re thinking of getting a breast augmentation, it’s natural to wonder how much time to set aside for the procedure and for recovery, so you can tell family or friends who will be helping you, plan time off work, and more. Breast augmentation is a relatively straightforward procedure, but understanding the full timeline can help you feel more prepared and confident going into your procedure.

How Long Is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

In most cases, breast augmentation surgery takes about one to two hours. Of course, this varies from surgery to surgery and depends on factors such as the type of implants, the surgical technique, and whether the breast augmentation is a standalone procedure or combined with other treatments such as a breast lift.

Surgery begins with carefully planned incisions, usually in discreet locations, such as along the inframammary fold (beneath the breast) or around the areola. Once the implants are placed, either above or below the chest muscle, your surgeon will close the incisions, and you’ll be moved to recovery.

Although the surgery itself is relatively quick, you should plan to spend several hours at the surgical facility to allow time for preparation and postoperative monitoring.

When Can I Go Home Following Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation is almost always an outpatient procedure, meaning you can return home the same day. After surgery, you’ll spend about one or two hours in a recovery area while your care team monitors you as the anesthesia wears off.

You’ll still be feeling the effects of the anesthesia for a while after your procedure, so you’ll need a trusted friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours. Most patients are comfortable resting at home later that same day.

How Long Is the Recovery Process?

Recovery from breast augmentation occurs in stages. Most patients return to their normal routines sooner than they expect.

Early Recovery

In the first three to five days, many patients experience swelling, tightness, or mild discomfort. These symptoms can be managed with prescribed medication, and some patients find over-the-counter options more than sufficient. Rest is crucial in the first week or so. Having a friend or family member to help with meals, medication schedules, and household tasks is recommended.

Week One

After a week or so, many patients feel well enough to return to light work or daily activities, especially if their job is not physically demanding.

Weeks Two to Four

Swelling continues to subside during this time, and you’ll be able to gradually resume more physical activity. Strenuous activities should still be avoided, as your tissues are still in a delicate state.

Week Six and Beyond

Most exercise and activity restrictions are lifted by this point, and you may notice your final results begin to settle as your implants fully integrate with your body.

Every patient heals at their own pace, so following your surgeon’s postoperative instructions is key to achieving the best outcome.
